10.9.12

the last few days have been crazy

- whirlwind weekend in tucson. bridal shower by the pool. naps & bouquet making. awesome food at rehearsal dinner. beautiful wedding. handful of mishaps. more good food and drinks. harassing the groomsman. fun after party. crazy sleep thanks to jet lag. brunch, booze by the pool and bbq. watching football throughout the day. another breakfast. more lounging by the pool. trip to an historical catholic mission. being a security risk. catching a few minutes of MNF. great conversations and a good movie flying home

- couldn't really get myself going this morning so i was a bit late to work. missed a meeting scheduled while i was out. cause i was seriously gonna jump on a call at 930 after a four day weekend. found out later that bitch from last week basically ignored my email. shocking. i'm furious and unsure how we proceed, but we sure as hell aren't going to be doing what she asked

- kinda freaking out schedule-wise. need to address the work issue plus work on my actual work project tomorrow after my chiro appointment. but dr. e just asked me to drop by to sit in on a new intake. so i have to cut my appointment short to meet her midday. meanwhile, i'm supposed to have a client at 6p and need to go to campus to handle some client notes. running up and down the highway when i need to be talking with my coworker and boss really isn't what i wanted to do with my day. at least the mkn stuff i may be able to put off til thursday. though i wanted to get some of that resolved before my next weekend away

so much for my post mini vacation happiness

10.4.12

today has been interesting. i present:

[via]
met with my team member and bossman to discuss some background on a "big" issue that we've been dealing with for two weeks. there's another meeting tomorrow, but i'm gonna be laid over in denver (woohoo!). afterwards, sent a couple emails. one was informational because people don't listen to what i say and don't include me on their ridiculous conversations. i dare you to go against me on my policies and procedures. the second was much more of a smack down disguised as sharing information about former/current practices. a request was made, and since i won't be on the call tomorrow, i can't tell the requester she's been denied at that point. i'm anticipating some yelling on tomorrow's call, but at least bossman will be there to back up my coworker. i got none of me homework done because i spent most of my day dealing with the work bs and talking about office politics with my coworker. so faking my way through class was funtacular. at least i wasn't the only one feeling behind or rundown. whole class seemed to skip this week's reading

on the positive side, i'll be on a plane to tucson in seven hours. i'm all packed up and ready to go. SO excited for this mini vacation :D now, to sleep!

10.3.12

today turned out pretty well despite the fact i am only still awake by shear force of will

- closed out a project that should have ended two months ago. i shake my fist at all the people who tried to tell me "i didn't get your email." "i didn't know about this" "i took this, but my record doesn't reflect it and i am too busy to contact support to resolve the issue". stfu, you lazy motherfuckers. but it's done, and my team still thinks i'm awesome

- picked up my bridesmaid dresses. both look and fit WAY better now, and no one gave me any "oh, honey, you're just too fat" bullshit. they even fixed some of the issues DB refused to acknowledge but i decided to ignore for the sake of my sanity. price wasn't cheap, but the alterations were worth every penny. i'll be taking some pants over there when i have the time

- had a pretty good meeting with dr. g-c (one on one internship supervision). that man has pretty much figured me out lol. he's not going to fall anytime soon from his perch as my favorite prof. he always makes me think when we chat. that meeting was supposed to be followed by another. our MKN meeting had to be rescheduled so i got to come home, shove a panini in my face and feel calm for an hour

nothing else of note on my brain. i'm off to play some sudoku before the presidential debate and a chat with my honey :)

10.2.12

clearly, i fail at the whole "get to bed by midnight" thing. at least i've been super productive the whole time. and it's not that i can't sleep, i just haven't crawled into bed yet *sigh*

- skipped class because i just couldn't mentally make myself get there. instead, i took care of some work things and came home. i had a lovely nap. mental health afternoon = win

- part of the issue was my freak out over counseling hours. after napping, i sat down and did the math based on my current client load. it's going to be close, but i may actually be ok. just gotta get my clients to show up every damn week :p :)

- i finished two assignments, relatively, on time. not that my assignments have been late. i'm just working up until the last second cause that's the only way i know how to roll. you'd think after over two decades of being a student i would have learned to work ahead

- got our business VPN all set up, and i'm pretty sure i have the settings correct. we'll see after i shoot K & N the access info. of course, checking and playing with the tool kept me occupied for a good chunk of time

- so many emails to respond to and calls to make tomorrow. plus picking up my dresses from the tailor, checking on my hallmark ornaments, meeting with dr. g-c and then meeting K & N. never. ending. busy

burning my shit at both ends has just become an understatement. good night

ahhh FREAK OUT

this has sort of been the summer of travel, and i want to tell you all about it. i opened this page specifically to tell you about my latest adventures. four weekends in four states over four months :) however, I JUST PAID FOR MY FINAL SEMESTER AS A MASTER'S STUDENT. cue hyperventilating because now i have to apply for graduation. GRADUATION!!! god it's been an eternity since the last time i had to do this

i am excited. but i'm more overwhelmed. with my grad school track record, i'm more stressed out than ever about getting through this semester. two classes stand between me and my MS. not that i'm done. i still have an additional two semesters plus boards for the certificate program. but my focus is entirely on getting through 15 weeks of papers, interning, exams and reading. if i slip even a little, i'm screwed. out of the class, out of the program, no master's for me

i know what everyone's going to say because everyone's already saying it. "you'll do great." "you've got this." "your're so close." i know. i know. i kinda believe you. i appreciate and love all the support from friends and family. and i'm definitely going to need it now more than ever. but this is really really daunting. i'm that much closer to the life i want, and i'm that much closer to the edge of failure. it has happened more times than i'd like to think about (and no, i don't mean "i got a B. i failed; i suck at everything"). so fucking this up is a palpable reality. no amount of support is going to make me any calmer or confident. just know there will be a lot of whining and crying and freaking out from now until december. you've been warned

wine & love11

let's pretend that i'm not a horribly inconsistent blogger these days. hooray for nora's weekly meme!

reasons my glass is double:

- my ravens lost to the damn patriots, and now our defensive coordinator is leaving to be indy's new head coach. both of these events are crushing my soul

- this woman i'm assisting is working all my damn nerves. she keeps compromising a file we're both working on so i have to fix it every time i open it. HUGE waste of time. three rants in the last 24 hours, and i'm still stabby

- my internship fell through for the semester. i either need to convince someone to bring me on at the last possible minute (class starts tonight) or drop practicum. under plan b, i'll be a semester behind for my graduation requirements

- got a call today that i might owe another $250 to the body shop for brutus' repairs. they're willing to work something out with me, but that's still aggravating. hoping my agent can get that shit sorted right quick

- i'm getting nervous that bossman won't approve my expenses from my work travel. company owes me money on top of my overtime pay, which i didn't calculate entirely until after my travel request was approved. i'm pretty sure cost would've been about the same if i'd flown and rented a car. still worried that the vp will throw a hissy about his budget so my boss will have to reject the report

reasons i'm loving this week:

- finally getting a software issue resolved so i could finish my online trainings. 100% complete way ahead of corporate's schedule. so i can put this potential work situation out of my head until april

- classes start today. i didn't feel much towards this semester until today when i packed my backpack. now i'm kinda excited to get rolling (despite the internship anxiety)

- finished my 4th book this week and got further into the marriage plot. i'm still back and forth in my opinion, but i'm looking to our book discussion sunday already. i've missed reading for fun so very very much

- last of my parts were installed this week. yay running boards! this weekend i'm getting everything cleaned out of the bitch so i can drop her off at my parents'. i also need to make a list of all the fixing up she needs. i'd like to give her to my brother as close to perfect as possible

- it's tax season! i'm still waiting on my W2, but i started popping in some stuff anyway. i love doing my taxes; yea, i'm a nerd. this may be the first year i do itemized deductions so there will be lots of playing with numbers :)

so what has you reaching for that second glass (in frustration or celebration)?

time for change

i have things i want to say, and i continually don't say them. i have nothing to say, and i stare at this little box looking for something. lack of motivation. lack of time. lack of interest. forgetfulness. getting overwhelmed... the semester is speeding up and winding down at the same time. five assignments (including finals) and two weeks left. i'm disappointed in the quality of one class; i'm kind of sad my other class is ending. which is which surprises me given my feelings going into this semester

i have this massive to do list. it includes work, school and misc personal stuff i want/need to accomplish in the next few weeks. it's freaking me out, but going into each day with no plan freaks me out more. i hate getting to this point in the semester. i let things overwhelm me and pile up. then the pile up overwhelms me further, and i shut down. i've been shut down since october :( i planned out my november so that i could get back on course. i squandered all my waking hours playing online games. i wanted to read a book over the holiday weekend. i got as far as opening it on my kindle. i managed to complete two of three class assignments yesterday. only the two that were due yesterday. i now have four chapters to read for one class. the four i wanted to have read two weeks ago so that i could start focusing on final prep

i always have a game plan. i just suck at follow through. i am incredibly organized, and i let all my effort go to waste. i need to knock it off

this is my "i'm disappointed in you" speech to self. i cannot keep beating myself up for slacking. too much is at stake, and this berating just becomes more wasted time. i say, "i will start doing better today" every single day. today it needs to be true. as soon as i post this, i'm going to jump on a personal thing from my list while i eat breakfast. i worked from home yesterday so i'm going to check my email before i pack up my laptop. when i get to the office, i'm going to read the two chapters i should've had read for the last two weeks. if i finish before five, i'll try to get caught up on a few blogs. when i get home, i'll work on clearing out the tivo

this is my plan to get my shit together. it's time to start executing

October 13, 2011

wine & love8

hosted by the ever fabulous nora! oh, what a week...

reasons my glass is double:

- several days of rain starting the same week i'm pmsing. i have so little energy; i'm staying awake by sheer force of (waning) will

- not accomplishing as much as i needed to over the weekend so i had to cram everything into two days. that resulted in only two hours of sleep one night, which doesn't help my already exhausted self

- got my contingency planning assignment*, which doesn't require extra training yet. in the job aid, it lists my restrictions as colorblind, unable to stand for long periods or bend and exceeding ladder weight restrictions (325 lbs!!!). not one of these things is true, and i don't know where the information came from. none of that is in my employee profile *scowl*

- this work project is driving me insane. i seriously hate managing people and fielding questions i can't answer. it doesn't help that this woman keeps asking me the same fucking question. i've told her what i know, and i'm dealing with people on the other side of the world. i can't get you an immediate different answer so STOP ASKING

- general impatience and annoyance with everything. mixed in with some bullshit causing justified annoyance

reasons i'm loving this week:

- i had a lot of fun while i wasn't getting any work done. dinner at brewers art was amazing. chuck's rugby match was fun even though i didn't have a clue what was going on. and the wii party was full of ridiculous awesome (post coming soon)

- i attended a few psych webinars. two were boring, but the eating disorder session was great. the presenter was fantastic, and i'm pulling her studies for my research paper :)

- 1st midterm and 2nd paper done. i think i did pretty well on the midterm, but i'm concerned about the paper after tuesday's discussion. it's mostly opinion based. however, my opinion was based on a misunderstood concept. we'll see in two weeks. gotta refocus on the next midterm, another paper and prepping for my group...

- midweek massages and margaritas (and tacos and queso and girl chats). much needed on all counts

- JP GOT ENGAGED! she's one of my best girls, and i'm so incredibly happy for her (and a wee jealous). so excited that i ordered her little pink box gift while we were on the phone. can i just say that i've had her and HB's gifts picked out for ages?! i knew these boys were right :)

so what has you reaching for that second glass (in frustration or celebration)?

*basically, the union role i would fill should they go on strike next spring. we go through this every two years since half the company is unionized. i have my qualms with unions, but i don't believe in scabbing

getting it together

this week has been driving me crazy. to start, i freaked out the other day about my finances. i'm still paying off my last minute trips to georgia, and i just got slapped with a $1500 estimate for car maintenance. the one item i absolutely need is the most expensive on the list, which i most certainly can't cover right now. although, the guy who wrote up the estimate put in the wrong quantities for a couple items so i had to recalculate. i think i might run by when my girl is working to get a proper one done. it's still gonna cost my first born, but at least i'll have all the right info

my first instinct was to take care of my car and not put money in my savings. this is when i really started to lose my shit. all of my savings goals are carefully calculated. i'm already not sure i'll meet my "quitting my job to be a full time intern for a semester" goal, but that's only one of five goals that i am actively working on. there are seven others on hold. i am a saving fiend! one of those current goals is for a new car at the end of the year. forsake the new baby for my old lady? um... um... no? but then i'll be giving the car back to my mom in double crappy condition. she also needs some major body work done. i usually treat my things very nicely, but i could never afford to have the damage fixed. and i refuse to let my mom pay for it. so i'd like to at least have her regular maintenance taken care of; i'll figure out the body work some other time. i know i can give the car back with the understanding that i would have her fixed up over time. i just dunno if i wanna do that. and mom still doesn't know what she wants to do with the car

so i started thinking about my budget options. looking at my debts and living expenses to see if there's anywhere i could squeeze some extra cash for car expenses. not unless i want to pay the absolutely minimum on my debts. uh no *sigh* i need an extra paycheck, but that just ain't happening. on the upside though, i realized i might be able to get my credit cards paid off sooner if i made a few small adjustments. double nice because i want to close one of the accounts after i get the car. i need the credit history for now, but i'm really not liking the issuing company. two days later, i'm feeling much more confident about the new plan to take care of business financially, staying within my current means

making better budget plans led to a new homework plan. i have a million pages of reading each week plus a video to process and workbook pages to complete. i constantly feel like i'm going in too many directions, and i haven't been able to keep up. this is week three, and i was still catching up on reading from week one. no bueno. so i sat down with my syllabus and planner to figure out what the fuck was going on. instead of focusing on catching up, i also looked at the next two weeks. basically, what needs to be done through the end of the month. instead of trying to read as much as possible during a certain block of time, i gave myself one assignment per day. narrowing my focus to avoid "i'm such a procrastinator" frustration. i walked into work wed with every intention of reading a chapter because i normally have nothing to do. instead i had my second panic of the week...

last week, my team informed me that they hadn't, as yet, found what we were looking for in this audit. really not good. i had a file on wed of what had been researched so far. i opened it and immediately ignored it. ugly spreadsheets make my head hurt. instead i putzed around online for a couple hours. wed is my short day so putting off work until 2pm was not my brightest idea. i spent the next two and a half hours trying to make sense of the file and freaking out. i was pretty sure my team was confused about a certain point. however, i was convinced i was also missing something important. not having an inkling of what it was, i couldn't formulate a question to pose to my POC. so i put it off until yesterday. i spent most of the day refreaking out over the file before i just gave up. i sent a note back to my team to clear up the confusion. i could wait another day to see if i could sort through what we could possibly be missing...

in the midst of all that work insanity, guess what didn't get done. my fucking homework. frustrated, agitated and convinced i was gonna give myself an ulcer before the week was out. by some miracle of awesomeness, i got the two chapters i wanted to read done with plenty of time for other stuff. i even dozed off for a minute last night halfway through the chapter. new plan of attack might actually be working. it probably helps that last night's business meeting was cancelled. i had a couple extra hours to play with... i walked in today to a response from my team and my boss. i touched base with my POC, and i think all is ok. we may be missing a piece, but it's not vital to the audit. i've checked all my usual time wasters this morning and even spent some time looking at car dealerships. dude i want to work with hasn't responded to my inquiry yet so i'm searching for a potential replacement. i'm very selective about who i do business with. i need to find someone i feel comfortable with who isn't going to harass the shit out of me until i buy something...

i hate these occasional panics, but i just might be in a better position because of them. today, i've got my shit together, and i'm ready to face the next stretch head on. now i'm gonna go make my lunch and start this next chapter. should be a good one; it's conduct disorders :)

August 14, 2011

off the rails

so much has happened in the last few weeks. emotionally, it's hard to keep up. i've started four posts about the happenings; clearly, nothing's been published. i have a few more posts rolling through my head that i haven't had the time or patience to flesh out. i want to get back on track with everything, but i need to visualize and plan it all out first. here's what's up:

*grad school: i'm embarrassed to admit my academic defeats so i doubt i detailed much of this before. i'll start towards the beginning. last semester, i was on probation. i got fucked in the fall so my gpa dived. i tried my best to get what i needed to get it back up, but fell just short. it doesn't help that one of my grades may be wrong. no, it's not going to boost me over the threshold, but every point counts. unfortunately, JB is an asshole. it took him a week to respond to each of my emails; then he just stopped responding altogether. at the end of june, i got the letter saying i was officially suspended. no class for me in the fall, and i'd have to jump through hoops to be allowed back in for the spring. i had a meeting with the program director, now EJ (JB was the interim director while TM was on sabbatical). i was almost in tears at the end of the meeting. happy tears. she and SB (director of academic advising) believed i should get another chance so they were going to waive my suspension. no begging or pleading from me required. i registered for classes a couple weeks ago. i had a meeting with SB this week to discuss the numbers and do the paperwork. she wanted to hammer home how important this semester is, which i totally agree with. if i don't get the grades, i'm done. that is not an option. much like last semester, things will be difficult and i'm ready for the challenge. i have another email in to JB, i put in my paperwork for my education benefits and my money is ready to go

*finances: i was obsessing over and reconfiguring my savings goals because of the semester beginning. then i started focusing on my long term goals. after days of checking and rechecking, i realized how beneficial having a side hustle would be for me. paying off students loans and saving for huge future purchases over three years without using money from my primary job? sign me up! of course, that was before i reconfigured the MKN budget. there are quite a few assumptions built in given that we dumped our first client before any business was done. once things get moving though, i think everything will work out nicely for the business and us

*work: i'm managing a project that i'd rather be doing. i have the boring job of coordinating between people. i'd much rather be running and analyzing reports, even if it's a cumbersome, time consuming task for one person. what else do i have to do? granted, just like last semester, my lack of projects gives me more time to do homework. i'll be taking full advantage of that given the insane workload i'm going to get

*family: my grandmother was sent to hospice on the 31st because her kidneys appeared to be shutting down. on the 1st, the nurse thought the doctor had misdiagnosed her because she was doing better. the morning of the 2nd, she died. i'm glad i had better sense than to believe what the nurse told my mom monday. false hope is the worst when dealing with sickness and death. she lived 100 amazing years, and her body decided it was time to go. my parents went down to atlanta wednesday to get everything together for the funeral. i went down thursday to help mom because i knew she wouldn't get the support and assistance she needed. her side of the family is wonderful, but they just don't get us. we spent two days running around and making phone calls and two days trying to mentally prepare. tuesday afternoon, we said good bye. over the week, we shared a lot of stories, jokes and tears. we saw a lot of old faces, too. sometimes i forgot what a big heart she had; she touched so many people in one way or another. everyone was a part of her family, not just those of us tied by bloodlines

*health: the stress of the last two weeks took a toll on me physically. mindless eating to the extreme. i still documented every bit of what i ate and drank. so i know i ate at least double my daily allotment every single day i was in atlanta. before i left, i was barely eating at all. i had to consciously remind myself to eat because i simply wasn't hungry. i've been home since wednesday evening, and i still feel way off. my body has done everything it can to let me know it is displeased. even thinking about it now is making my stomach turn... i shouldn't really call it mindless eating. i kept saying i was craving sugar, but i wasn't really craving it. i had an insane compulsion to devour sweets. all of my eating was compulsive. i stripped the skin off a chicken thigh like i used to when i was little. i've always disliked chicken, but i love the fried skin. i ate a whole leg. then i ate the skin my mom hadn't wanted. then i ate all the bits that had fallen into the box. then i grabbed a thigh and methodically removed all its skin. cameron asked, halfway through, if i was going to eat the rest. with no hesitation or guilt, i said "no, i don't want it" like i was seven years old all over again... i'm feeling more mentally myself, but i know i started to undo all the good i've done. i dread getting on the scale this morning, but i know it's the next step in getting back on track

*random: jesse sent me this old article a few weeks ago that still has me thinking. do i see what's out there or do i focus on the minutia? over the last year or so, i think i'm opening myself up to more possibilities. i know where i want to go, but i'm more willing to try different paths to get there. i'm still a detail oriented planner; i will always stress over the little things. i'm just allowing myself to be guided a bit more by the universe instead of forcing/rushing the universe to fulfill my demands

given all i have/need to get done, i really need a game plan. i've already set up my personal schedule for the fall, which includes all the usual obligations for work, school and myself. i'm buying books this week so i can get a headstart on readings. eight books between two classes means no wasted moments. i'm hoping the week off for the funeral hasn't screwed with my momentum. i have wiggle room, but not much. like usual, the schedule is probably overly ambitious, but i don't know how else to be

March 30, 2011

hunting

so i've had two job interviews recently. one last week, one today. two totally different positions and organizations. and both interview requests came in after i decided i was putting the hunt on hold. i'm still miserable, but it was pointed out to me (thanks, tasha!) that i already have a pretty solid end date. applying to positions i may not want would just mean potentially suffering through another two years of yuck. and really, i only care about the next two years... actually, 20 months to be exact... which is how long i have left to get my master's. i decided last night that my new financial goal is to not work during my post grad licensing semester. i'd have two classes (3 if the schedule gods love me) plus my 3rd semester of practicum. at most, i'd do something part time. so it's not really necessary for me to put myself through hell sending out all those apps for jobs i don't love

so last week's interview was for a business manager position at a local theater. love the space, and i really do miss working in the theater. i wouldn't be tearing down sets or rolling my eyes at actors, but i'd still be involved in things. my potential boss seems like a pleasant enough woman, but i can tell she has her difficult moments. the board president is adorably mother hen. i know i don't have the specific experience they're looking for, but i have a lot of related experience. i absolutely believe i could rock that job if given the opportunity. it's also located near a few of the DC spots i visited last week during dc fit week. work followed by bikram yoga or boot camp? feasible. though it may be awhile before i hear back about the position because things are a bit harried at the moment...

today's interview was for an administrative assistant at a startup. there's potential to grow in the role, possibly taking on responsibilities similar to the ones i'm supposed to have now. the owner and her (unofficial) partner seem like fantastic coworkers; i think i would adore working with them. the atmosphere is professional, but still laid back. the office is cute and comes with adorable mascots. it was a very informal interview, but one of my favorites. [sidebar: one of the things i picked up from last semester was how terrible interviews are at predicting job success. they're really only good for determining if a person's personality is a good fit for the company] the position would involve a lot of data entry and task management (little phone interaction? yay!), which i'm awesome at. the hours would be flexible, and i would be able to work from home when necessary. even though it seems like a step back, i really would like this position. i love what the business stands for, the atmosphere and the job potential. it's also situated near my new favorite part of dc. things are swampy so they're hoping to move fast, which means i could hear back on this before i hear back on the business manager...

of course, i've already played with my budget numbers as much as i could. i don't know what the business manager role would pay (or if i could adjust the hours to fit my class schedule... really wishing i'd asked that now), but i know what my ask will be. with the admin position, i know the hours, and they know my needs. as it's only part time, i wouldn't be quitting my current job outright. however, cutting my current hours plus picking up hours at the new place seems doable. just need to justify it to the bossman i guess. for now i'm playing the waiting game... while also dodging calls from my old temp agency. submitting my updated resume was not the best idea. they have positions, but everything's on a specific timeline. i really need longer term right now to keep up with the life i've created... even though i took a step back, i'm wiggling my toes back in. please keep your fingers crossed, everyone. mama needs a new happy place

February 26, 2011

we're done here

some shiz went down while i was out of the office last friday. so monday, i walked in to an already burning building. my favorite. i spent the entire day trying to find "missing" documents and gather information. it's really frustrating when people doubt you; trying to prove that you know your shit is a HUGE pain in the ass. turns out, it was a problem on their end with an easy solution. so i left the office thinking all was well. tuesday afternoon, i got a bunch of recall notices for an email i hadn't yet received. awesome. an email finally came through that once again called in to question stuff that had been done plus a "nevermind, we found the files we needed". whatever. i got another email on thursday. "what we need isn't in the file. we need you to find the document." seriously? i don't give a shit about any of this. this is no longer my fucking problem. I AM NOT HR. if you can't find the fucking records, i can't help you. you are now the record holder; stop harassing me. i ignored the email, and i decided that i was fucking done

so i opened up monster for the first time in about 2.5 years to scour the latest openings. i found a handful, but wasn't able to apply. i could not for the life of me remember my password. i sent three reset requests, but the emails never came through. so i sent a note to customer support. i forwarded myself the openings of interest and closed up shop for the day. luckily, someone at support was able to send me a temp password the next day. i updated my resume and contact info. then i applied. then i popped over to a few temp agency sites to check their openings, and i applied. i also checked some companies i'm interested in for anything, and i applied some more. i'm trying to leave no stone unturned because i'm really hoping to have a new job by april 4th. but i have somewhat difficult constraints and qualifications. most of the positions worth looking at were either way above or way below my qualifications, paid practically nothing and/or had crazy hours. for a minute, i thought about taking a PT night job. except i would never have any fucking time to sleep

midway through temp positions, i remembered how much i hate job searching. *sigh* but i'm going to keep applying. i'm really hoping for one particular position because the hours and pay would be perfect for me. since the job with neal's company is looking less and less likely, this would be the next best thing. i had also applied for a position similar to the one neal wanted to create, but i got an email yesterday that the position is on hold. boo. it was also a solid contender

i am over being miserable 40 hours a week. keep your fingers crossed that something works out for me... or, you know, hire me to be your overpaid personal assistant. i also do windows ;)

some things

kinda left y'all hang there, didn't i? well the changes aren't quite done, but they also aren't that big so i'm in no rush
what's changed around here?
- i have a fantastic new header, created by ms. liz who blogs all over. if you're interested in having some work done for most anything, you should check out her design site. she's pretty fab :)

- i'm also rearranging things (that's really the big to do) because i'm starting to feel cluttered. there's a new page for buttons and badges and another all about me. i'm slowly working on them because [shock of all shocks] i actually had some work to do at work the last few weeks

- i may also move the blogroll to it's own page. not everyone has a button, but the sidebar is starting to get out of control (much like my google reader :p)
some updates...
- i did not do well in my summer class so i'll be retaking it in the fall. it's taught by the same professor :p at least i already have the book and know what the assignments will be like

- i did not get the job i interviewed for, but i'm not too heartbroken about it. i still have my fingers crossed for something else to open up with them because they're an awesome small company

- i can't really attest to how the detox went, but i'm still working on balancing myself. i took InSlut to a special event hosted by one of my fave bloggers, and i tried to be the best attentive girlfriend that i could. of course we both got distracted by video games when we got back from pittsburgh, but we watched true blood cuddled up on the couch. that counts as quality time, right? lol
and then there was miscellaneous stuff...
so some of you may have noticed i started a tumbler (the perpetual planner) for all the silly future things i think about. some of you also know about my weight loss blog and my contribution to the in it to gym it blog. what you don't know is that i also have a sort of secret wordpress blog. it's secret because it's all about sex, and i don't want to alienate readers by posting all the lurid details of my sex life here... then again, i don't update it much because i have such a boring old lady sex life. i'm not going to link to it because 1) i'm still apprehensive about sharing and 2) because i'm thinking about moving it to blogger. i kinda hate wordpress (.com not .org). as much as i love blogging, i am not willing to pay for it right now. the only advantage it has is the commenting, but i'm willing to sacrifice nested responses for completely free... for now it lives in hiding; we'll see if i change my mind about that

that's pretty much it. my life's been fairly constant otherwise. promise i'll be back to regular blogging soon. i miss it and you guys :)

i'm on a break

you won't be seeing much of me round these parts for the next few weeks because...

~it's crunch time for my summer class. final on the 15th, two 10 page papers due on the 19th

~i'm applying for a new job; interview is on wed. i'd have actual work to do at work if i get it

~i've let social media consume my life. i started contemplating on social media day (which i didn't attend), and i feel a bit like troy: "how can something delicious be bad for me?" social media is my giant cookie, and realizing how neglectful i've been is giving me a stomachache. i need to find more of a balance so i'm taking a step back for a little

i'll still be checking in on y'all from time to time, and i'm totally going to be at DCamazeballsHH next week. i just won't be posting or lurking around twitter as much. so after this goes up, i'm going to peace out for the long weekend and my own social media detox :)

i hope you all enjoy your holidays (or normal weekends if you're canadian/living in canada ;))

friendly with money

every so often, 20SB does a blog carnival. what's a blog carnival? from what i can tell, it's just a bunch of people posting on a particular topic and putting all their links in a centralized location lol (kinda like the monthly femme writes posts). the difference though is that the carnival comes with prizes (ooh ahh). this particular carnival revolves around money... so if you'd known me for awhile, you'd know how hilarious this topic is for me. why? cause i'm OBSESSED with my money. did you see that new widget on the sidebar? have you seen my finance tool tweets? are you paying attention to me at all? :p

my mom mentioned the other day that she has no idea where i get it from. she's not good with money, and my dad doesn't really 'manage' as much as he seems to just collect receipts. i, on the other hand, have numerous spreadsheets and online resources to keep track of every penny. more and more these days i'm trying to curb my spending. so i was a bit surprised that my score on the schwab moneywise calculator was 57 out of 100. um... what? i totally took it a second time, which resulted in a 65, still "middle of the road". i know that's a good thing (especially when the average for 20somethings seems to be right around 70), but i'm still disappointed. i bet it's because i don't have a will or contribute to a 401k :p i'll worry about a will when i get married, and i refuse to contribute to a 401k that is entirely comprised of company stock. hate the company and would never voluntarily invest in it no matter the situation. granted, by the time i finally quit, i'll be fully vested but that's beside the point

of my closest friends, i am one of a few who is not working in my preferred field. and i am the only one who isn't job hunting for something better/closer to my dream. why? money. it's all about the money. i've complained on more than one occasion about my job, but it does have the benefit of netting me a pretty penny every paycheck. for the first time in my life, i'm actually making money. instead of blowing it like in the past, i've set up a few savings accounts. i'm even trying to help InSlut get his monies under control. it's a bit amusing that, with the exception of CF who was lucky enough to marry an accounting boy, the women i know handle all the money. we joke about putting the boys on budgets and giving them allowances for video games and such (because they're all gamers to some degree). plus, since we're so budget conscious, i know i don't have to worry when girls' weekend rolls around. we usually bring tons of snacks and sit around talking for three days straight. it's the best thing ever. the boys don't get it, but we don't care :) sometimes we'll go out to eat, but it's usually somewhere moderately priced and we don't go crazy with our orders. EH and HH stopped drinking for the most part so that's another expense we don't have to worry about. lol the last time we went to HH's, i probably spent more on tolls than i did on anything else that whole weekend

then i have N. he's also trying to get his finances in order, but somehow he keeps finding himself trying to stretch those last dollars until payday. i routinely harass him about his spending because i'm that kind of mother hen. every two months or so, we have these huge discussions about it. sometimes he'll even whip out his spreadsheet as proof, and i one up him because i'm a jerk. he's really gotten a ton better in the last couple years, but sometimes money just poofs out of his account... much like it's going to do for me this week. i just remembered i have a wax tomorrow, which i did not account for when i decided to go out drinking with N's coworkers last night. bye bye buffer money... at least we always make sure that we can cover rent, utilities and groceries. it's those trips to IKEA and pottery barn that we have to talk each other out of. anything else is no big deal. we both pace ourselves or try to at least. so when we decide we absolutely have to have three more bookcases, an armchair and cute lamps, the money will be there. it's patiently waiting to be spent, and we'll be more than happy to oblige :)

dress for success

femme writes has become a monthly phenomenon thanks to shine and marie. this month's topic is women in the workplace

i found this topic somewhat amusing. not because of the glass ceiling or the wage canyon or sexual harassment. those are seriously large concerns, and i don't think i have much to say about them beyond: WTF, men, get your shit together! instead i'm gonna focus on women and their clothes because i have developed an obsessionlove for fashion in recent months

my old VP, PD, did not appreciate my work fashion choices when i first started here. she told my (then) boss, DA, that it wasn't appropriate work attire. really? woman who won't leave the house unless her husband approves the outfit say what? PD you may not be exposing an awkward amount of skin, but your clothes are a bit tight (and 20 years too young) for a workplace full of testosterone. my favorite part was the fact she couldn't discuss this with me. instead she told DA to tell me that my clothes were treading a fine line. i, of course, was confused by the chat i had with DA because she is nice and was beating around the bush. she finally said that PD questioned my taste, and i restrained myself. i'm sorry we can't all shop at bluefly; i don't make that much money so i buy what i can afford. i also happen to be a slightly bigger girl with a greatbig rack to match. no matter what i'm wearing, there will probably be a little cleavage. was PD gonna pay for my new wardrobe or new boobs? uh no. i told DA i would do what i could with what i had. which meant buying undershirts to wear under my buttondowns instead of tanks. small sacrifice that cost me $10 (and i still didn't wear them all the time)

to me, this was a woman on woman crime. i have never once had an issue with any of the men who work for this company. yea, they ask me stupid questions on a regular basis, but none of them has ever made me uncomfortable about how i present myself. i would better be able to accept PD's stance had she a) talked to me herself and b) not have been a bit of a hypocrite. but it's not just her indirect attack on me. i've found myself mentally criticizing the women around me. dressing like frumps, gym teachers and stressed out mamas. you may be those things, but i don't want to see it walking past me to the ladies room... and then i have to pause... wtf! why am i so concerned about the appearance of other women in this office? they come in, do their jobs (noisily, some of them, but still) and go home. what they're wearing when the jobs get done shouldn't really matter. she put on pants and a top. do i need more? a woman lost her job because of how she was dressed. because it was "too sexy". once again: men, WTF. granted these men were trying to avoid a sexual harassment situation (going about it the wrong way of course), but it's still an issue because she did make an effort to cover up. how we dress should have no bearing on how our performance is assessed. if you're too distracted by my old school or sexy librarian clothes, it is your problem. it should not be a reason for my salary being lower, my bonus being smaller or my coworkers ogling me around every turn. it should not be a reason for termination if i am making an effort to be a professional true to my own fashion aesthetic. it also does not need to be a reason for women to belittle each other. we already comment amongst ourselves on strangers, do we really need to attack the people we spend 40ish hours a week with? we need to let this go, and focus on those other systematic biases

...it's stopped being amusing

where's waldo?

dunno, but i'm still around...ish. here are some updates on that

i have a new waxer. my previous waxer, B, mysteriously left the spa. i say mysterious because i think it'd be inappropriate to grill the staff about where she went and why. so my last wax was done by J, who was a bit disappointing. she's nice, but i think she's newish to waxing. it just seemed like she wasn't 100% sure of what she was doing, and she ended up missing spots. last week, i booked with L and she was wonderful. she even tweezed and trimmed. "i don't want anything coming out of that bathing suit." me either, honey :) she is my new favorite. after deciding i liked her, i compared her to B. similar personalities and waxing skills. i would say they're in their mid/late 50s. J is probably around early 40s. not to be ageist, but i like my women older ;) the older the better

i got my bio grade on friday; a B :D which means i have an excellent gpa this semester. i would like to review my final just to see what i missed, but i'm trying not to be that guy. i'm really happy with my grades so i won't push anyone's buttons... my little sister also had a good semester. she busted her ass and actually did better than me. i was joking that she's officially smarter than me. we're equally smart; i'm just lazier :p summer classes started on saturday, but mine isn't until thursday. i'm feeling meh about it, but it's only monday

speaking of saturday, the chili cook-off was excellent. we got there in the middle of switchfoot's set, which was amazing, and stayed til the end. i'm sure anberlin and the local band were great, too. cage the elephant sounded great, but they could step up the live performance a wee bit. alice in chains was another great one. they're one of InSlut's favorite bands, which was one of the main reasons i wanted to go (and why i got the expensive VIP tickets). the new guy is soooo good. i also enjoyed a few beers and hot dog; boyface had chili dogs. unfortunately, that was about all we ate so when we got back to the hotel, he ordered a couple pizzas. it had just the right amount of grease (plus i'd had a bunch of water at the concert) so i wasn't hungover in the morning. it was like drinking in college again :) my belly didn't speak up until we went to breakfast; it was not in the mood for anything so i had a little of everything... downs of the weekend: asshole who i wished bad things upon, followed by a drunk cry, STP butchering their own songs, struggling to get back to the hotel with a dead phone and a worn out boyfriend and having to do the pee dance on the metro (don't worry. i made it to a potty without incident). i'm putting the day down in the yay column

not much else is going on i guess. i have a new job task, which is temporary until the security team actually has people again. i may actually have gotten a kid a job with the group. fingers crossed that he's interested and interviews well. he's the son of my mom's friend and, literally, just graduated... InSlut is good. it's my turn to stay at his place for our next few visits lol. he has a new roommate, and she's already a million times better than the last pair. she spent the whole weekend cleaning his place; it looks AMAZING. i might just hug her the first time we meet, and that is completely atypical... i'm super excited about two movies. sex and the city 2 (duh lol) and a midnight showing of hedwig and the angry inch. i love campy queer movies, and it's been forever since i've watched hedwig... oh! i also started a tumblr. it's just a baby, but feel free to check it out. further entrenching myself in the internets addiction, while trying out a new platform :)

so yep. that's what's up. how're y'all? :)

March 17, 2010

what's this? a post with substance? why, yes little blog friends it is. midterms are over, and it's spring break. my brain is finally sighing in relief

InSlut sent me this link a few weeks ago when i was having a rough day. it's soooo true. i just got my grades for bio, and i'm feeling pretty ok. i know i need to step it up for the rest of the semester, but i'm not as far in the hole as originally thought. i want at least B's, and i'm sitting at a low B- in bio currently. i have no idea how i'm doing in stats since our prof doesn't really use webtycho (the red headed step brother to blackboard). it sucks, but i'm assuming i have an A. i'm hoping to use spring break to ramp up. i have 2-3 chapters to read each week, between the two classes. if i can get some reading knocked out this week, i should be in a good place for the rest of the semester

unfortunately, i have already wasted two days of prime reading time. how typical. my boss is in spain on business (lucky ducky) so it's been slow at work. i was a bad employee who rolled into the office at 2 and left at 4 today. partly because i could not get myself out of bed today. partly because i was chilling at the DMV this afternoon. sidebar: i now have a new license with a new picture; i look more me and less parolee now :) i was planning to stay at the office until 5, but people were getting on my nerves. there are several new people sitting  in the cubes near me, and they are loud bastards sometimes. i took care of a few in office things, and bolted immediately after. the plan was to do a few mandatory trainings and read when i got home. instead i took out some trash, finished unpacking my car, started laundry, putzed on the internet and talked to InSlut. somehow i managed to use up 5 hours with my (mostly) unproductiveness. i didnt even eat dinner until 930 because i wasnt paying attention. so for the rest of the week, i'm putting myself on a schedule. each day has specific items to tackle...

w: mandatory trainings, reading bio, catching up on blogs and laundry
th: work related stuff, reading stats, more blog catch up and cleaning
f: work stuff, reading bio, and finishing (hopefully) my blog catch up
sat: unpacking, stats problems, reading bio, CSS training, DVR clean out
sun: unpacking, blogging, reading bio & stats, catching up on project runway

each item gets a 2-3 hour block until the weekend; i'm hoping that helps me keep my focus... i'll worry about next week's to do's on sunday. for now it's time for bed. i shouldve been asleep 5 hours ago :p oops

January 29, 2010

everyone loves a quickie

today's accomplishment: conquering my google reader. after catching up on everyone else, i finally have time to update you on my goings on. well... there ain't much so this won't take long :)

- work: we got notified today that annual bonuses are back on. the company made enough money so they can reward us for making them enough money. woohoo! since i got a title change and a raise last year, my bonus will be pretty decent. too bad a huge chunk will go to uncle sam (super boo). on a downer, my project is on its own little rollercoaster. one day we're chugging along, and then we take a quick dip to finance's issues. while they're thinking of a way to tell us no, we discuss the issue with another department. time for an "oh we handle all of that crap for everyone" loopdeloop. find out that our department will not gain financially from this venture because the equipment now belongs to a different group. ooooh was that a full stop? is the ride over? of course not. we still need to deal with the process. oh look! another dip. turns out corporate has been working to streamline their process with our legacy group's process for the last year. now i have to figure out how to tell my boss that once again this project may not belong to us. i'm gonna do that monday. for now, im getting off the ride

- school: classes started tuesday. biological basis is reading intensive, but there's only exams and 1 short paper (woot). statistics will be mostly a refresher so i'm less worried about it. both my professors seem cool, which is good, and everyone's been super nice. i officially like university of baltimore... i like them so much, i applied to join their group blog. i think it'd be fun, but it's just one more thing i'm trying to add to my crowded plate. what's wrong with me?

- apartment: pants and i are moving. i'm so excited about getting out of glen burnie and that mouse house. we've looked at a bunch of places, and ive narrowed the list to two. theyre about the same cost, roughly the same size and have several features we wanted. pants is going to see the 2nd place this weekend (he had to miss our scheduled visit). i hope he likes it because it's only 10min* from my office. and the company that bought his company has an office that's about 15min* away from this place (his current office is 10min* from our place in GB). if he doesn't like it, i will be sad, but the 2nd place is also good. it's between two major highways (i love that MD is all highways) that'll get us to work in no time :) technically, we put a hold on the 2nd place as a backup, but i'm really hoping pants likes the 1st place and their availability opens up

- le boy: things are going fabulously :D i'm visiting in a few weeks to go see jimmie's chicken shack. plus im using guiltmy feminine charms to get him to visit me. if you don't know what charms i'm using, you need to follow me on twitter ;) boy still needs an appropriate nickname. right now the front runner is "Mr. InSlut"** (oh yea, i would actually capitalize that), partially because i'm a terrible person who treats him like a prostitute. buy a boy burgers and garlic fries, and he'll do anything you want... the only reason this fun doesn't have a label is because i'm holding back. i might have to face facts that he's my not-boyfriend [if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck... but you refuse to acknowledge that you are staring at a fucking duck, it's a not-boyfriend]. even admitting that won't make it true in my head :p

- this weekend: GIRLS WEEKEND! i'm so excited. i'm hanging out with my college besties - JP, H(HF) & E(H). we've made it a point to get together at least once every season. H got first because she and S just bought a house and got a dog. i've got my fingers crossed that we'll see each other a little more often since we're now in a 4hour span instead of 12hour might have to fly instead of drive span. thank you I95 (can't believe i'm admitting that highway is making my life better). as usual, there will be lots of talking, eating, talking, sight seeing, talking and talking :) i can't freaking wait. as soon as i post this, im shutting down my computer, heading home for a quick dinner and then getting on the road. BEST WEEKEND EVER

so that's pretty much what's going on... turns out there's more than i thought :p

*without traffic
**thanks ashley! (the other me in my gmail lol)

November 20, 2009

worst payday ever

double boo. so i got a fabulous raise that went into effect on the 1st. today is the first paycheck with my increase... which fucked up my taxes. i planned ahead (cause that's what i do best); thank you irs website for being handy. i didnt want to get screwed when it came time to file, so i opted to have extra withheld from today's check. that was a bad idea...

i had a total of $560 withheld, which resulted in a paycheck $200 less than im used to getting. it's just enough to cover rent... and little else. not so much an fml moment since i (luckily) have money in savings. the remainder of my school loan money became my emergency/credit card payment fund in aug (i took this semester off, not entirely voluntarily. tell you about it later). you'd think a raise would be wonderful at this time of year. and i was actually looking forward to having the extra cash to maybe shop on black friday. im going out regardless to watch the crazies fight over rock band. but it wouldve been nice to punch a man in the face for the last blender at walmart...

i guess i should be thankful i still have a job and a steady paycheck, but im still grumpy
