waxing philosophic

so i'm selectively participating in TMI thursdays (created by LiLu, in case you didn't know). it just so happens that i have TMI commentary, and it's thursday so don't get too excited that this will happen again :p

i had a bikini wax today. i like getting them done professionally because a) it's awkward to do at home, b) i fucking hate nair and c) im a lazy bitch. i've never gotten them regularly cause i wasn't sure it was worth the expense. a couple of places i went to were not really set up for proper waxing, and i always left thinking one side was more done than the other. (note to others: don't get waxed at a place that does nails. that's the mistake) this time around i decided that if i was going to do it, i was going to do it right. i'll spend an extra $20 for symmetry. so i did a little research on spas; turns out their waxing options are not as expensive as i'd thought. or i was looking at the wrong spas before :p i opted for the spa where we sent my mom for mother's day. convenient location, beautiful facility and free parking downtown. me likey.

first trip was new year's eve in prep for a certain weekend. BEST WAX EVER! my technician was such a doll. she was chatty, but not in that weird gynecologist trying to distract you from a speculum way. the spa uses waxing gel that hardens itself, instead of the old gooey waxy wax + cloth strips. the whole process took no time, and was pretty painless. LOVE

today was my second trip; same spa, same technician, same bikini wax. i prebooked and got a 10% discount (woot) so i was double happy. all was going fine, and then she asked me to lift my leg. um? ok. i thought she was checking that she'd gotten all the wax... uh no. she applied more wax... TO MY TUSH! not all over, but enough to make me wonder about my hairy ass. because clearly i have one if she's trying to wax it... she repeated the process on the other side, then sent me on my way... now i keep thinking about my ass stubble. is it noticeable to the casual passerby? is it prickly like leg hair when it starts growing back in? should i have my whole booty done? does anyone else have this problem? has he noticed? .....*brainsplode*

thanks, B. you're a lovely lady, but please keep off my rear. i'm too self conscious for that shit

LMAO. See, THAT is why I can't go get a bikini wax though I've always wanted one. I don't even know if you keep your undies on? I just keep picturing that scene from Duece Biggalo where they spread his cheeks. So we just shave, SHAVE IT ALL like a mad woman and grumble at stubble and rash.

hahah i had the same undies question my first time. cheapy places, yes at the risk of getting wax on them. nicer places, if you want to, but they also have disposable underwear :)

Oh man I wish I could work up the courage to go get a bikini wax. SO tired of standing on my head to do it myself. I don't know why I can't seem to just GET OVER IT.

OMG I would have had the same reaction you did! I am nervous to have it done professionally. I'm not worried about the pain, just nervous about showing someone my chach. It can't be any more embarrassing than giving birth, but still...

@IRST - lol it's one of those things that i tip extra for because she's all up in my business. depending on how far it goes, the technician wont see anything directly... i guess

@Mandi - i have no idea where i found the courage to go the first time. it gets easier every time i go (even with the weird last experience)

LMAO!! Alright....so um....I am going to try this bikini wax thing, BUT, I am only getting the TOP waxed, not the whole damn thing. I am not easily embarrassed and I have no issues letting the OBGYN examine me, but I think I may be a bit uncomfortable letting a chick wax ALL of my stuff lol.

And that whole lift your leg thing - I think I would have died laughing, OMG!

I'm sorry to laugh at your story and pain, but seriously HAHAHAHA.
I've never got a wax job (I know, how dare I?!) so I have no advice here. But I do have a question for you... does it hurt really bad to get a wax? I'm really scared. Is there someway I can prepare? I'm a virgin to this so any advice you can provide would be great.

@ebony jewel - if you go to a really good place, the tech should ask you what you're comfortable with. dont be afraid to be explicit about how much and making sure it's exactly what you want. my first few times i was too shy to say it wasn't perfect

@jenni - as the days pass, i find the situation increasingly amusing. it was definitely strange, but i guess it comes with the territory lol. the pain factor? it definitely stings for a few seconds, but there's no major pain. i think the old school wax + strips hurts more than the hardening gel (plus it's messier). my recommendation for prep: shave down before you go. makes it quicker and allows for a better grip. uneven pulls can increase the ouch factor. postwax advice: apply rubbing alcohol to the waxed area to prevent ingrown hairs and easily remove any excess wax

I don't know that I will ever get one, but it does not seem as bad as I thought it would.

Also? I've gotten my eyebrows waxed and the lady asked if I wanted my lip waxed. I inspected it with the biggest magnifying mirror I could find after saying no and found some peach fuzz like stuff, but nothing that screamed I'm becoming the bearded lady. However, I still wonder if I come off that way now.

I've been going for a few years now. I love it! My waxer also uses the hard wax which is SO much better for your skin (I hear?! I've never done the research) and it feels tons better. I've had to left the leg too! You're not alone!

another piece of advice for anyone is pop 2 advils before you go in or have a shot of vodka! :)

@ashley - that reminded me that the one place i used to go to would always ask if i wanted my eyebrows done. always trying to get more money out of us, and making us feel like freaks in the process :p

@soph - yay! im not the only one lol. i've never taken anything beforehand. might try it next time :)

Hahha oh dear. . .it's called a "playboy wax" (a place I went to once does them). Usually they ask you how much you want done! seems a bit inconsiderate -_-

oh hb, this is why i need you in my life :) i scheduled a "playboy" for my first wax, but i guess i got the "bikini". this time i scheduled the "bikini" and got the "playboy". crazy!
