two places at once?

in my grad school haze, i almost forgot that i was guest posting today. go pop over to visit with my post (and others) on ms. britt's bloggy baby: getting desultory on lamidge. we're talking puppy adoption :)

you remind me...

it was a whirlwind weekend, and im really sad it's over... especially because it hit me that i won't be seeing InSlut again until may. we didn't get nearly enough time together on sunday, and our schedules just don't sync up in april. as usual, i packed too many people into a too short weekend. i had a lot of fun at HE's sleepover and seeing EH/JS at their new office (eep they're grown ups with jobs and websites and business cards :)). JP was even able to make the open house so we got to catch up a little. after that, i had a hellish drive from fairfax, va to hershey, pa that included an almost death because some asshole in a coach bus wasn't paying enough attention. i was in hershey to watch the bears play along with MM, JM and AS. i invited InSlut along cause he's a hockey fan and it was an easy, small "meet the friends" thing. unfortunately, two people backed out so he didn't get to meet a couple of my closies. the game itself was great (bears won), but there were also some non-game disappointments... naturally, i spent the night at his place instead of heading home, and fun was had by all :) we watched movies, listened to music and talked about seeing russia from the bedroom. while cuddled up in bed, i also realized something...

i don't know where the happy came from, but now it lives with me. i don't have doubts or fears at the forefront of my thoughts. the inner maelstrom, with its bad memories and hurt feelings, seems to be less prevalent. i don't know if it's getting smaller or just easier to ignore. but i do know that when i'm with him, i don't feel lost, hurt, confused or inferior. they've been replaced by feelings of comfort, safety and love...

i feel home

wanna visit me?

the correct answer to that question is yes :)

this year, i'll be hosting at least three fabulous visits. 1) InSlut came down at the beginning of spring break 2) HB is coming to town for a few days in april and 3) my girls will be in town for our quarterly awesomeness later in the year. i'm all about being a good hostess so i'm always searching fun things to do around town

for InSlut's trip, i kept it simple. there may be a ton to do between baltimore, annapolis and dc (i love living in this area), but i want to pace myself. while the girls and i enjoyed a whirlwind visit last year, we didn't have a chance to do everything on my checklist. additionally, he has a few personal constraints that make certain activities less ideal. as such, i figured we'd have a lazy day one day and visit two of my top three places (papermoon diner and the american visionary art museum) the next day. rounding out the top three is the aquarium, but i wasn't in the mood to wade through a sea of children to see the sharks. i'll save that for another time :) since InSlut is an artist, i was a bit hesitant that he wouldn't enjoy the eclectic aesthetic of papermoon and the visionary. he, however, enjoyed both immensely. he was critical of some of the works at the visionary ("i could probably get my stuff in here"), but we were both falling over ourselves when we reached the final exhibit. if you're following me on twitter, you may vaguely recall my gushing over this a bit

the exhibit contains a few select pieces from the collection of eugene von bruenchenhein's paintings. you can view the nearly complete online collection here. unfortunately, the online database does not capture how truly amazing von bruenchenhein was. i was blown away by the colors used in his works. even 50 years later, the paintings are so vibrant, the paint as vivid as they day he painted. J loved his technique, how von bruenchenhein used various household objects to create varying textures in each image. the paintings leap at you; every angle reveals something new and intriguing. we (mostly) joked about having a couple pieces translated into tattoos. if my boy gets a sleeve*, i already know what it will look like :) our only disappointment is the newness of the exhibit. because it was only a little over a week old at the time, the sideshow (visionary gift shop) didn't yet have any corresponding take home items. i've got my fingers crossed for postcards in the coming months. the exhibit will run until march of next year, and you can bet your sweet tushie that i am taking HB to see it next month :)

what's this? a post with substance? why, yes little blog friends it is. midterms are over, and it's spring break. my brain is finally sighing in relief

InSlut sent me this link a few weeks ago when i was having a rough day. it's soooo true. i just got my grades for bio, and i'm feeling pretty ok. i know i need to step it up for the rest of the semester, but i'm not as far in the hole as originally thought. i want at least B's, and i'm sitting at a low B- in bio currently. i have no idea how i'm doing in stats since our prof doesn't really use webtycho (the red headed step brother to blackboard). it sucks, but i'm assuming i have an A. i'm hoping to use spring break to ramp up. i have 2-3 chapters to read each week, between the two classes. if i can get some reading knocked out this week, i should be in a good place for the rest of the semester

unfortunately, i have already wasted two days of prime reading time. how typical. my boss is in spain on business (lucky ducky) so it's been slow at work. i was a bad employee who rolled into the office at 2 and left at 4 today. partly because i could not get myself out of bed today. partly because i was chilling at the DMV this afternoon. sidebar: i now have a new license with a new picture; i look more me and less parolee now :) i was planning to stay at the office until 5, but people were getting on my nerves. there are several new people sitting  in the cubes near me, and they are loud bastards sometimes. i took care of a few in office things, and bolted immediately after. the plan was to do a few mandatory trainings and read when i got home. instead i took out some trash, finished unpacking my car, started laundry, putzed on the internet and talked to InSlut. somehow i managed to use up 5 hours with my (mostly) unproductiveness. i didnt even eat dinner until 930 because i wasnt paying attention. so for the rest of the week, i'm putting myself on a schedule. each day has specific items to tackle...

w: mandatory trainings, reading bio, catching up on blogs and laundry
th: work related stuff, reading stats, more blog catch up and cleaning
f: work stuff, reading bio, and finishing (hopefully) my blog catch up
sat: unpacking, stats problems, reading bio, CSS training, DVR clean out
sun: unpacking, blogging, reading bio & stats, catching up on project runway

each item gets a 2-3 hour block until the weekend; i'm hoping that helps me keep my focus... i'll worry about next week's to do's on sunday. for now it's time for bed. i shouldve been asleep 5 hours ago :p oops

happy national grammar day

yea, it's a real day :p don't believe me? check it out :) so in honor of one of my favorite aspects of grade school english, here are links to my favorite grammatical things from the internets [please note that my love does not extend to all punctuation, and i don't necessarily use super awesome grammar when blogging... but you probably noticed that already]

Stuff White People Like - Grammar: "it is impossible for a white person to turn down the opportunity to proofread" (lol that's me)

William Strunk's The Elements of Style: "aims to lighten the task of instructor and student by concentrating attention ... on a few essentials"

and everyone's favorite... the oatmeal! motherfuckin' semicolon; apostrophe and misspelled words with a test

there's lots of fun to be had over at the national grammar day site, but i will fight you on some of this list: Top Ten Grammar Myths
#8 i'm disappointed in Merriam-Webster for allowing this crap to be added to the dictionary. people, i will red ink this when i proofread your papers (because of course you would ask me to proofread; reference item one above)
#2 is still extremely awkward to me. however (yea, #9!), i've noticed that i'm splitting more when i write, and i HATE it. that's a red ink
#1 red ink! the point of a paper is to sound pretentious. pretentious snoots don't end sentences with prepositions :p
i realize the list is referring to regular conversations, but some fools like to apply the above to academic work. please don't do it; you just look ridiculous

this ends your grammar lesson of the day. i hope you had as much fun as i did. now, i'm off to hunt down a grammartini :)
